"Scientifically-based"
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) challenges teachers to do their homework on determining that their instructional techniques are "scientifically based." I couldn't agree more. As a Special Education teacher I will be steadfast in seeking and using only methods that have a proven track record for success. I will accomplish this by staying current with the latest research on instructional practices—especially in the areas of reading, writing, and math.
I taught a struggling student at the Center for Exceptional Families (Oakwood Hospital) with evidence-based techniques (such as pre-reading, using graphic organizers, and asking questions about text while reading aloud). The student's parents reported a boost in grades resulting from my instruction. "In implementing coordinated, early intervening services ... a local educational agency may carry out activities that include—professional development for teachers and other school staff to enable such personnel to deliver scientifically based academic instruction and behavioral interventions, including scientifically based literacy instruction."
